Kamakura Private Tour from Tokyo
Explore temple gardens, a bamboo grove and the Great Buddha on a Kamakura private tour from Tokyo. Your English-speaking chauffeur collects you from your hotel and drives you between the sights in a private luxury vehicle. Along the way, enjoy a day that brings together Japanese history, local food and time outdoors.
This Kamakura day trip from Tokyo follows a customizable route through the city’s temples and shopping streets. Because the vehicle is exclusively for your group, we can adjust the stops around your interests. Choose from the suggested itinerary below, then tell us how you would like to spend your day.
Meigetsu-in Temple and Gardens
First, visit Meigetsu-in in Kita-Kamakura and explore its garden setting. The temple is known for hydrangeas, although flowers and garden access vary with the season. You can also pause for tea when the teahouse is open. Temple admission and refreshments cost extra.
Hokokuji Temple, Bamboo Grove and Matcha
Next, walk through the bamboo grove at Hokokuji Temple, often called Kamakura’s Bamboo Temple. Follow the paths between the tall bamboo stems and take in the green surroundings. Afterwards, you can enjoy matcha tea overlooking the bamboo garden, subject to availability.
The bamboo garden has an admission fee, and matcha costs extra. Tea service may pause during busy periods. Check the official Hokokuji visitor information for current admission and tea details.
Komachi Street and Lunch
Then explore Komachi Street, also known as Komachi-dori, for local shops, Japanese snacks and souvenirs. Stop for lunch at a restaurant that suits your tastes. Alternatively, take a break at a cafe before continuing your Kamakura sightseeing tour. Food, drinks and shopping purchases are at your own expense.
Kotoku-in and the Great Buddha of Kamakura
Continue to Kotoku-in to see the Great Buddha of Kamakura, a large bronze statue seated in the open air. Spend time in the temple grounds and admire the statue from different viewpoints. You can also enter the statue’s interior when it is open, for an additional fee. Temple admission is separate from the tour price.
Alternative Stops for Your Kamakura Tour
If you would like a different balance of sights, we can replace suggested stops with these alternatives:
- Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine: Explore a major Shinto shrine closely connected with Kamakura’s samurai history.
- Kita-Kamakura Yoh Shomei Art Museum: Browse paintings and illustrations by artist Yoh Shomei in a small museum setting.
Tell us your priorities, so we can allow enough time at your favourite places. Museum entry and any other paid visits cost extra. The final route depends on opening hours, traffic and the time available.
Your English-Speaking Chauffeur
Your chauffeur takes care of the driving and provides commentary in the vehicle between sights. At each destination, you explore independently at your leisure. For a fully guided experience, you can request an accompanying walking guide for an additional fee.
